Mientras IBM necesit\u00f3 un aut\u00e9ntico ej\u00e9rcito de trabajadores para convertirse en el gigante de los a\u00f1os 80, NVIDIA opera con una plantilla diez veces menor pese a liderar hoy el mercado burs\u00e1til global.<\/p><p>En su pico de 1985, IBM super\u00f3 los 400.000 empleados en todo el mundo, una cifra equivalente a la poblaci\u00f3n de varias ciudades medianas. Su estructura respond\u00eda a una industria basada en la fabricaci\u00f3n de mainframes y hardware propio, donde producir m\u00e1s implicaba contratar m\u00e1s personal y ampliar l\u00edneas de ensamblaje.<\/p><p>Hoy, incluso las denominadas \u201cbig tech\u201d quedan lejos de ese volumen. Seg\u00fan datos recientes, Alphabet (Google) tiene 190.000 empleados; Microsoft, 228.000; Apple, 166.000; Meta, 78.000; y NVIDIA, apenas 36.000. Aun as\u00ed, esta \u00faltima alcanza una capitalizaci\u00f3n cercana a los 4 billones de d\u00f3lares y lleg\u00f3 a rozar los 5 billones a fines del a\u00f1o pasado.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fa8ed11 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"fa8ed11\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"800\" height=\"532\" src=\"https:\/\/oti.unp.edu.pe\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/b2464c4066d7e67da82fb121b482f040.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-image-14967\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0f85c32 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0f85c32\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>La diferencia tambi\u00e9n se refleja en los ingresos. En 1985, IBM factur\u00f3 50.000 millones de d\u00f3lares \u2014unos 150.000 millones ajustados por inflaci\u00f3n\u2014. En 2025, Alphabet report\u00f3 402.800 millones; Apple, 416.000 millones; Microsoft, 281.700 millones; y Meta, 200.000 millones. NVIDIA, por su parte, registr\u00f3 130.000 millones en 2024, a la espera de sus cifras m\u00e1s recientes.<\/p><p>Si se mide la rentabilidad por empleado, el contraste es mayor: IBM generaba unos 370.000 d\u00f3lares por trabajador; NVIDIA supera los 3,6 millones por empleado, casi diez veces m\u00e1s. El salto responde a una productividad impulsada por la digitalizaci\u00f3n y la automatizaci\u00f3n, que desde los a\u00f1os 70 ha multiplicado la eficiencia en el sector tecnol\u00f3gico.<\/p><p>El modelo tambi\u00e9n cambi\u00f3. IBM integraba dise\u00f1o y fabricaci\u00f3n. NVIDIA, en cambio, es una empresa \u201cfabless\u201d: dise\u00f1a sus chips, pero delega la producci\u00f3n en compa\u00f1\u00edas como TSMC, que operan con procesos altamente automatizados. As\u00ed, puede concentrar su fuerza laboral en arquitectura, investigaci\u00f3n y desarrollo, escalando con menos mano de obra directa.<\/p><p>Con todo, hay un terreno donde IBM sigue siendo dif\u00edcil de igualar: su dominio transversal.
